SEO- Offpage SEO Strategies

All of us are aware now that field of Search Engine Optimization is booming with every day. People might be unaware that what they learnt yesterday might become absolute tomorrow. The only way not to log back in race of SEO, one has to update his knowledge regularly by reading SEO articles.

Being a SEO expert, I feel it’s our duty to make people/clients aware of some factors that deal with Offpage SEO. Most of things you might be aware of and some might be hidden treasure for you.

1) Community Creation: Also termed as online reputation management, it is first step which you should do. Signup with popular social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, LinkedIn and create a profile for you/ your website. Connect with friends, share among them and promote your company. This will help you to build an online reputation. This is all what is popularly called Web 2.0.

2) Blogging: It is one of powerful strategies to promote your or any company’s website online. Write a blog with unique content. Convey precisely to your readers but don’t forget to promote your blog in blog search engines and blog directories. You can post comments at other websites too. If you are not good at writing content, hire someone!

3) Forums: If feasible, create online forum/discussion board hosted on your site. Invite your friends to start new discussion. Post replies/thread in other related forums. Your signatures can provide you valuable links.

4) Submission in Search Engines:  This is one of important steps. Submit your website in popular search engines. To name a few: Google, Bing, Yahoo, Alexa, Alltheweb.  Submit in as many search engines as you can.

5) Directory Submission: These days’ people think that directory submissions are useless. However, in my views it is still alive. Only thing you need to be careful is about directory in which you are going to submit your website and the category in which it will be submitted. Try of submit your site in DMOZ, Zoominfo, Onemission. Never go for paid listings.

6) Social Bookmarking: It can be a powerful tool but don’t abuse them. People submit content in social bookmarking sites without having knowledge about the right ways to extract benefit from them. Handle tags properly. Few do follow links can give a big boost your SERPs.

7) Link Exchange: Try to exchange links with industry related websites. This can give a major boost to your SERPs but beware of black hat techniques while exchanging links with other sites.

8 ) Link Baiting: Many people don’t understand link baiting and consider it black hat. It is giving due credit to author/original resource from where you copied content. If you follow it, chances are there that other might also follow the same practice.

9) Photo Sharing: Done correctly, it can bring handsome traffic to your website. Share product images and make them public. Invite your friends to view them/comment on them.

10) Video Promotions: As with photo sharing, you can share or publish your product videos, expert opinions in major video publishing sites like YouTube, Metacafe, Dailymotion etc.

11) Business Reviews: Write business reviews and ask your friends/clients to do it for you. Few major sites are Shvoong, RateitAll, Stylefeeder.

12) Yellow Pages and Local Listings: If nature of your business is service oriented, try to dominate your local market. Google maps, yahoo Maps, yellow pages, hotfrog, supermages are few sites worth trying.

13) Article Submission: It is one of oldest ways to earn backinks. Submit your website in good article directories like Ezine, Go Articles,Buzzle etc.

14) Press Release: Submit your PR in sites likes OpenPR, PR leap, 1888pressrelease. This might help your site to get published in Google News.

15) Classifieds Submission: Post your products/services on classifieds sites like Craiglist, MySpace, Vivastreet.

16) Social Shopping Network: If you have an e-commerce site, this can be good strategy and can help you get branding for free. Submit your product feed into MSN Online Shopping, Google Product Search and Yahoo Online Shopping.

17) Answers: Try to help people; people will in return help you. Answer questions asked by people. Sometimes you can place a link of your site in resource box. Some great sites are Yahoo answers, Answer Bag, Cha Cha etc. But don’t spam!

18) Document Sharing: Share your business documents, slides in Slide share, google docs. This helps in building brand.

19) CSS, W3C Directory Submission: If you offer website design or related services, submit your websites in W3C and CSS directories along with RSS sites.

20) Gadget/Widget Development: Develop some interactive gadgets for your site. Publish them on your website/blog and other social networking website. Let your friends and world be aware of your brand.

21) RSS Feeds: If you have a blog/RSS feed, then you can always submit your site in RSS directories.

22) Citations: Build citations to your website in authority sites. This will give a big boost to your search engine rankings.

23) Link Wheel: Also called Google Wheel/Wonder Wheel, it involves cross linking web 2.0 sites and your website. This can help you drive good amount of traffic.

24) PPC/ Adwords: If you don’t have time to put all these strategies to work and still in need of traffic, PPC is answer for you.

Image and Video Optimization for SEO Success

A successful online business is defined by its measure of web presence, typically how high it is ranked in the major search engines like Google and Yahoo. Today, every small and big online business owner knows that SEO is critical to their website’s success. Search engine optimization is the key to attaining web business excellence; it’s all about getting to the top of search engine ranks and sustaining the cash flow.
We have heard it said repeatedly: “content is king”. Yes, it is. However, it is not the only thing that can be optimized, or should be optimized. Sadly, to a large number of online business owners, optimization still begins and stops at content.
Pictures and videos help improve your site’s content. They provide essential breaks in paragraphs of text, helping to clearly highlight a product and promote it. When optimized, pictures and videos further your website’s chances of attaining high search engine ranks. This is where a professional SEO services company can help you out.

How to Optimize Pictures?
  • An image is the closest your customers will get to experience a product online. You will want to use the right type of image in your website design to compliment your content. If your content talks about a dog training package, the image should ideally be that of the package contents (books/videos) and not just a couple of dogs, or a dog with its trainer.
  • Pictures convey ideas better than words. Choose an image that visitors can refer to for a better idea of what your content is describing.
  • The image of a German Shepherd dog will be more specific with “German Shepherd” or “Alsatian” instead of “myalbum17.jpg”. Use specific keywords that best describe the image.
  • Even a generic keyword like “dog” may not get you targeted visitors for German Shepherd or Alsatian.
  • Always use an alt tag for your images. Search engine crawlers cannot ‘see’ your image and read its content. Image alts make your images ‘visible’ to the search engines, especially when they contain the specific keyword describing the image.
  • If you are linking text to an image, the anchor text should also contain the keyword describing the image.
  • Keep your file names, alt tags and anchor texts short and descriptive. Don’t overload with too many keywords.
How to Optimize Videos?
  • Similar to images, use keyword rich alt tags and anchor texts for your videos. Also, make sure you have a video file name that is specific. Adding a keyword content transcript for the video will also help search engines read it better.
  • Always post your product video on your site first, and then post on video submission sites. This makes it easier for you to get links by using embed codes.
  • Break a large video in two parts. Post both parts on your site and only the first part on video submission sites. Provided you have interesting and useful content in your video, visitors will visit your site for the second part of the video.
  • Search engines love sitemaps. Make a video site map and let search engine crawlers go through your videos.
  • Build internal and external links for your videos. Keep subject relevancy in mind when you are linking videos. You would not want to link a dog training video to a dog movie clip. That kind of linking does not work with users. Besides, it’s no value addition to your site.
  • Make your videos social by bookmarking, tweeting or sharing them on social networks.
  • Use keywords to optimize the URL of the page where you are placing the video.  This usually works when there is only one video on one page. You can also change headings, subheadings, and Meta and title tags to describe the video. Of course, the page’s content has to be on the video.
In other words, if the page is there solely to promote the video, make URL, headers and Meta tag changes enunciating video benefits, content, etc.

How Google +1 Can Change the Dynamics of SEO

If you offer SEO services in India, you must have heard about Google’s new search result recommendation service called Google +1? This has revolutionized the field of social SEO and has started giving a tough competition to Facebook’s “like” option.
What is Google +1?
When you log into your Google account and search for something on Google, you will note that

the search results appear with a +1 button beside respective links. Clicking on the +1 button, you can recommend the website to your Google contacts.
These recommendations will appear to your friends when they search on the same keyword. For example, if you searched for iPod and recommended an ecommerce website, when your friends search for the same gadget with the same keyword, they will see that you have recommended a particular site for it.
However, to make the +1 recommendation visible, you have to change the settings in your Google account’s +1 tab and make it “public” from “private”.
A website admin can add the Google +1 button in his website very easily. The process is similar to adding a Facebook “like” button or Twitter “tweet” button. When a visitor comes to a site and likes it, he can click on the social media button to recommend it to his friends and social circle.
The process of “like” and “Google +1” may look the same, but the +1 has a lot more effect on search engine optimization and page ranking.

How it Works?

When you click on the +1 button, the link gets shared with your social circle. This social circle consists of all the contacts in Google Talk, Gmail, Buzz, Contacts, Google Plus, etc. The recommendation appears to both the person who has recommended the link and to friends in his social circle.
For example, if Bob, Bill and Dan are three friends and Bob recommends a link, Bill and Dan will see that their friend Bob has recommended it. Now, if Bill also recommends the same link, then Bob will see “you and Bill have recommended this site.”

How it Helps in Online Marketing?

The Google +1 is a boon to SEO companies. Online marketing has completely changed with the introduction of Google +1 button. The click-through rate, or CTR, will see a boost for those that have higher number of Google +1 recommendations.
Normally, popular sites will be recommended by thousands all over the world and help them to secure top ranking. But Google +1 is also beneficial for small companies. If you are looking for “SEO services in India” and see that the search result shows a recommendation for a particular company, you will be more interested in it, even if they don’t appear in the top 10 search results. We are always more comfortable to work with a company when our friends recommend them.

How Google +1 Will Affect SEO?

If a link is being +1’d by a large group of friends, Google will increase its page rank. Compared to false account SEO activities, a genuine recommendation helps Google to understand the value of that website. If your friend recommends a particular site, you will probably spend a lot more time there than on other sites. Google measures the success and failure of a site by its bounce rate. Bounce rate calculates how long a user stays on a website. It will help Google’s algorithm and page ranking system.

Can it be Manipulated by Black-hat SEO?

If you think that anyone can randomly click on the +1 button to increase a website’s search ranking, then you are mistaken! Google is no fool; they can mark a spam +1 recommendation very easily. If you use your Google account regularly and use services such as Gmail, GTalk, and Google Plus, etc, your recommendations will be considered as genuine. But if you use a fake account and only +1 hundreds of links everyday, Google will soon realize your intention.

Why it’s Here to Stay?

What is the advantage of Google +1, when there is already Facebook “like”?
When you “like” a site on Facebook, your friends can only see that recommendation for a few days. Later, they will forget about it. But when you +1’d a link, it stays for a very long time. Even if your friends search on the same keyword after several months, they will see that you have recommended a particular site months ago. This is very important for online marketing. Google +1 increases the chances of brand recall and rise in profit margins.
Google +1 is an excellent tool for SEO and marketing. However, it has one shortcoming. To recommend a site and see your friends’ recommendations in the search results, you have to log in to your Google account first. Though, if you consider the number of people using Gmail everyday, the possibility of seeing a recommendation while logged in is very high.

4 Simple Design Ideas to Improve Your Website’s Performance

Most website designers I know can’t wait to finish a project. All it takes is a positive feedback from the client and the site to go live before they slump relaxed on their beds. That’s okay because website design can sometimes be quite energy draining, especially with crazy clients breathing down your neck with crazier design ideas.

However, the problem with this approach is the ever-changing web landscape. Designs that convert today might not convert tomorrow. Sometimes, they might not be converting at all in the first place. The cause: most web designers will never take the time to test their designs before submitting them to clients. The result: a long, often unpleasant, client mail and redesigning.

Redesigning a website, or web page, that you have previously designed can be a major problem even if it does not require an overhaul. In fact, an overhaul is often easier because it uses fresh ideas; there is less work building from scratch than breaking down and changing an existing design.

I believe in simple solutions; minor adjustments that promise big results. An incremental approach to web designing can get you effective and measurable results without taking up too much time, and to a great extent, help avoid a design catastrophe.

1. Select a Maximum Impact Page – Traditionally, the home page is selected to make the greatest impact on visitors. I suggest to not blindly following traditions and starting to dig a little bit into
  • Find out your top landing or entrance page (look under ‘Content’ on the left sidebar in Google Analytics).
  • Using the Advanced Filter link at the bottom of the table, filter and remove the minimal trafficked pages.
  • Sort pages by bounce rate and select the page with maximum potential for improvement. This will usually be a page with high visitors and high bounce rate.
A combination of high visits and high bounce rate means your web page has enough of what attracts maximum users searching your niche, but has little of what it takes to retain them. With minor tweaks, the bounce rate can be reduced while keeping your visitor count intact, or increasing it.

2. Detect Improvement Areas – There are several ways you can find out the areas of your web page that need improvement. Tools like Userfly or ClickTale will help you follow how people interact with your website. CrazyEgg’s and clickdensity’s heat maps are also excellent detection tools for popular and overlooked areas of your site. You can also set up SurveyMonkey or PollDaddy to find out what your users want.
Additionally, you can find out how these following areas of your website works:
  • Headline
  • Calls to Action
  • Buttons (size, color and location)
  • Text size
  • Color scheme
  • Images
  • Whitespace
  • Advertisement density
  • Value proposition
3.  Define – Your analytics tool will probably throw up a hundred different things that can be changed. By using the incremental approach, you must select only the major items that you believe can be improved to create a major impact on visitors and search engines.
Remember, an overhaul is not your aim, but tweaking a few items in your website to make a seemingly unworkable page work, is
Narrow down your list of changes to include the top three plausible impact areas on your page. Develop content and code to make changes you believe will benefit your site. Limiting your list of changes makes your work manageable, although if you want to test more changes, it will have to be an ongoing process.

4.  Test – After you have made changes on your page, the A/B Split Test in Google Website Optimizer will help track your results. Select a conversion page that accurately reflects your primary goal for that page.
A/B split test results will start showing anywhere from a couple of hours to a few weeks. The effect of your changes will be easy to spot once you do a summation of average traffic to your page for a set period. If you have implemented changes with sincerity, you will most likely be rewarded with an increase in conversions.
However, it is possible your new page performs the same as your previous page or that there is a considerable drop in performance. But that’s the fun of testing. Every successful and unsuccessful test result will give you something new to learn about what works and what does not for your website.
